TAO.Audio
Local-first, instrument-driven audio platform.
TAO.Audio is a local audio platform for coordinating digital instruments and live musical systems, exploring a new paradigm beyond DAW sessions and fixed MIDI interfaces.
What this is
TAO.Audio is an audio platform that runs on a local area network.
The primary entry point is the Orchestrator, a long-running service that manages connected digital instruments, running audio systems, and shared local data. The Orchestrator spawns and supervises one or more Auditoriums - active musical contexts where digital instruments, physical interaction, and dynamic configuration come together.
The Orchestrator
The Orchestrator is a persistent audio runtime rather than a DAW project file or audio editor.
- Manages connected digital instruments
- Creates and supervises Auditoriums
- Coordinates data and resources across the local network
The Orchestrator remains present even as instruments, auditoriums, and participants change.
Auditoriums
An Auditorium is a continuously running musical context managed by the Orchestrator.
An Auditorium can host digital instruments, audio controls, visualizations, and interactions shared among connected participants. Instruments can join or leave, and configuration can change, without stopping the system.
Auditoriums are intended to represent ongoing musical systems rather than discrete tracks or sessions.
Digital Instruments and interaction
Digital instruments are first-class participants in the platform.
A TAO.Audio digital instrument has identity, configuration, and an active role within an Auditorium. Digital instruments can be reconfigured while the system is running, including granular changes across interfaces, layouts, tuning systems, playing modes, and physical controls.
This allows digital instruments to evolve over time without rebuilding hardware or restarting the system.
Local-first operation
All coordination happens on the local network.
This provides low-latency interaction, predictable behavior, and independence from external services. The platform is designed for situations where responsiveness, reliability, and direct control matter.
What this is not
- a DAW
- a MIDI controller
- a plugin host
- a preset library
- a cloud-based music service
- a consumer audio application
It is infrastructure for building and running coordinated musical systems.
Status
TAO.Audio is an active personal project focused on building the Orchestrator and Auditorium runtime, as well as digital instruments and interaction models that explore the platform's potential.
It is not currently available for distribution or general use.
